Types of Bhasma and the Method of Wearing Tripuṇḍra
शिवेन विष्णुना चैव तथा तिर्यक्त्रिपुंड्रकम् । उमादेवी च लक्ष्मींश्च वाचान्याभिश्च नित्यशः
śivena viṣṇunā caiva tathā tiryaktripuṃḍrakam | umādevī ca lakṣmīṃśca vācānyābhiśca nityaśaḥ
One should ever make the transverse Tripuṇḍra (three lines of sacred ash), along with the utterance of the names of Śiva and Viṣṇu; and likewise remember Devī Umā and Lakṣmī, and other sacred invocations—constantly.
Sūta Gosvāmī (narrating Śiva Purāṇa teachings to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: In the Viśveśvarasaṃhitā setting, the teaching is framed as a universal Śaiva dharma centered on Viśveśvara (Lord of the Universe), where external marks (bhasma/tripuṇḍra) and nāma-smaraṇa function as constant remembrance leading to Śiva’s grace.
Significance: Bearing bhasma and tripuṇḍra with nāma-smaraṇa is presented as a daily identity-marker of Śaiva allegiance; in Kāśī-logic it aligns the devotee with Viśveśvara’s salvific sphere and supports liberation-oriented remembrance.
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Umā
Role: nurturing
The verse emphasizes nitya-abhyāsa (constant practice): marking the body with Tripuṇḍra and sustaining remembrance through divine names. In a Śaiva Siddhānta frame, this purifies the embodied self (paśu) and aligns it toward Pati (Śiva) through disciplined external sign and inner recollection.
Tripuṇḍra is a visible Śaiva sign closely tied to Linga-worship and vibhūti (sacred ash). It supports Saguna devotion by keeping the worshipper’s body and mind oriented to Śiva’s presence, while the continual utterance of divine names sustains bhakti during and beyond formal pūjā.
Apply the horizontal Tripuṇḍra (vibhūti/bhasma) and accompany it with reverent recitation/remembering of Śiva (and also Viṣṇu), along with honoring Umā and Lakṣmī through auspicious mantric utterances—maintaining this remembrance daily.
