Sthala Purana: Kāśī’s kṣetra-siddhi is traditionally tied to mantra, śuddhi, and consecration of space; this verse gives explicit mantras for dravya-prokṣaṇa and kṣetra-siddhi, aligning with Kāśī’s liturgical identity.
Significance: Establishes mantra-based consecration: pañcākṣarī purifies worship materials; ‘bhūr asī’ empowers the ritual field—supporting the doctrine that Śiva’s grace operates through properly sanctified mantra and space.
Mantra: नमः शिवाय । / भूरसीति
Type: panchakshara
Role: teaching
Offering: null
It teaches that Shiva-worship is not merely external: mantra makes the offering-fit and the place-fit, aligning the devotee’s action with Śiva’s grace (anugraha) so the rite becomes spiritually efficacious.
In Linga-pūjā (Saguna worship), the purity and ‘readiness’ of substances and space are established through mantra; “Namaḥ Śivāya” sacralizes the upacāras offered to the Linga, while “Bhūr asī” grounds and consecrates the kṣetra where the Linga is worshipped.
Perform mantra-prokṣaṇa: sprinkle the worship items while reciting “Namaḥ Śivāya,” then consecrate the worship area with “Bhūr asī,” treating the space as Śiva’s sanctified field before beginning the main pūjā.
