Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
नूतनं वै करोतीति प्रणवं तं विदुर्बुधाः । प्रणवं द्विविधं प्रोक्तं सूक्ष्मस्थूलविभेदतः
nūtanaṃ vai karotīti praṇavaṃ taṃ vidurbudhāḥ | praṇavaṃ dvividhaṃ proktaṃ sūkṣmasthūlavibhedataḥ
The wise know it as ‘Praṇava’ because it truly makes the seeker ever-new. Praṇava is taught to be of two kinds, distinguished as subtle and gross.

Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Mantra: oṃ (praṇava)
Type: gayatri
Role: teaching
It presents Oṁ (Praṇava) as a transformative power that renews the practitioner inwardly, and it frames mantra-practice in Shaiva terms as progressing from gross expression to subtle realization leading toward Shiva-consciousness.
In the Vidyeshvara context, Praṇava supports Saguna worship (audible recitation and ritual accompaniment) while also pointing beyond form toward the subtle, inner apprehension of Shiva as the indwelling reality—thus integrating Linga-worship with meditative absorption.
Practice Praṇava as both gross (spoken japa, often alongside pūjā) and subtle (mental repetition and meditation), letting the sound refine into inner stillness—an approach commonly paired with Shaiva disciplines like bhasma/tripuṇḍra and mantra-japa where appropriate.
