Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
प्रो हि प्रकृतिजातस्य संसारस्य महोदधेः । नवं नावांतरमिति प्रणवं वै विदुर्बुधाः
pro hi prakṛtijātasya saṃsārasya mahodadheḥ | navaṃ nāvāṃtaramiti praṇavaṃ vai vidurbudhāḥ
To cross the great ocean of saṃsāra born of Prakṛti, the wise know the Praṇava (Oṁ) as the ever-new boat and the supreme means of passage.
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating the teaching of Praṇava within the Viśveśvarasaṃhitā context)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: General teaching: Praṇava as the upāya (means) for crossing saṃsāra; applicable at all Śiva-kṣetras where Oṃkāra is central to worship and meditation.
Mantra: praṇava (oṃ)
Type: gayatri
Role: teaching
It teaches that saṃsāra arises from Prakṛti and is like a vast ocean; the Praṇava (Oṁ), aligned with Śiva as the supreme reality, is the effective means to cross it through disciplined remembrance and contemplation.
Praṇava is used in Śaiva worship as the seed-sound that sanctifies rites and inner meditation; when applied in Linga worship, it connects the devotee’s mind and offering to Śiva’s presence, leading from Saguna devotion toward realization of the highest principle.
Japa and dhyāna of Oṁ (Praṇava)—often as the opening and inner support of Śiva-mantra practice—performed with steadiness, purity, and devotion, as a direct sādhana for loosening bondage and moving toward liberation.
