Praṇava-Māhātmya and the Twofold Mantra (Sūkṣma–Sthūla) in Śaiva Sādhanā
षोडशैरुपचारैश्च पूजयेदिष्टमाप्नुयात् । येन शुश्रूषणाद्यैश्च शिवभक्तस्य लिंगिनः
ṣoḍaśairupacāraiśca pūjayediṣṭamāpnuyāt | yena śuśrūṣaṇādyaiśca śivabhaktasya liṃginaḥ
By worshipping (Śiva) with the sixteen traditional offerings (ṣoḍaśopacāra), one attains the desired fruit. Likewise, by devoted service—beginning with attentive attendance—rendered to a Śiva-bhakta who bears the sacred liṅga, the same auspicious result is obtained.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Affirms that full ṣoḍaśopacāra pūjā and seva to liṅga-bearing Śiva-bhaktas both yield iṣṭa-siddhi and spiritual merit, encouraging pilgrimage-temple culture and saint-service.
Offering: naivedya
It teaches that both formal Linga-pūjā (with the sixteen upacāras) and humble seva to Śiva’s devotees are spiritually potent, leading to the devotee’s desired auspicious fruit and progress toward Śiva’s grace.
The verse directly upholds Saguna worship through the Linga using ṣoḍaśopacāra, and extends that same reverence to the ‘liṅgin’—a Śiva-bhakta associated with the sacred emblem—showing that devotion expresses itself through both rite and reverent service.
Perform ṣoḍaśopacāra Linga-pūjā and cultivate bhakti through śuśrūṣā (attentive service) to Śiva’s devotees; as a practical takeaway, combine daily worship with respectful seva and remembrance of Śiva (e.g., japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”).
