य इमं पठतेऽध्यायं शृणुयाद्वा समाहितः । तस्यैव शिवभक्तिश्च वर्धते सुदृढा द्विजाः
ya imaṃ paṭhate'dhyāyaṃ śṛṇuyādvā samāhitaḥ | tasyaiva śivabhaktiśca vardhate sudṛḍhā dvijāḥ
O twice-born ones, whoever, with a collected mind, recites this chapter—or even listens to it—his devotion to Lord Śiva alone increases and becomes firmly established.
Sūta Gosvāmin
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Śravaṇa (listening) and pāṭha (recitation) of Śaiva scripture are presented as bhakti-sādhana; steady attention (samāhita) removes obscuration and stabilizes devotion.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It teaches that śravaṇa (devout listening) and pāṭha (recitation) performed with samādhāna (focused attention) directly strengthens śivabhakti, making devotion steady and mature—an essential foundation for grace (anugraha) and liberation in the Shaiva path.
By emphasizing attentive hearing/recitation, the verse supports scriptural devotion as a primary aid to Saguna Śiva worship—where the devotee approaches Śiva through sacred narratives and praises that naturally lead into liṅga-pūjā, mantra-japa, and reverent remembrance.
A simple practice is daily or Mahāśivarātri śravaṇa-pāṭha of the Śiva Purāṇa with a calm, collected mind (samāhita), followed by brief Śiva-smaraṇa or pañcākṣarī japa ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") to stabilize the devotion that the verse promises will grow firm.
