Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: Śiva’s word redefines all waters within a puṇya-kṣetra as ‘Śiva-Gaṅgā’: the tīrtha-status is conferred by Śiva’s saṅkalpa/ājñā, not merely by physical connection to the Gaṅgā.
Significance: Legitimizes local temple tanks, wells, and ponds as salvific tīrthas when situated in Śiva’s kṣetra—supporting daily snāna and ritual purity for residents and pilgrims.
Role: nurturing
It sacralizes waters found in a puṇya-kṣetra by equating them with Śiva-Gaṅgā, teaching that contact with such tirtha-water supports inner purification and devotion to Pati (Śiva), aiding the seeker’s movement toward grace and liberation.
By calling sacred waters “Śiva-Gaṅgā,” the text frames tirtha-bathing as preparatory service (upacāra) for Saguna Śiva worship—cleansing the body and mind before approaching the Liṅga with faith, offerings, and mantra.
Perform tirtha-snāna (ritual bathing) in holy-place waters with remembrance of Śiva, then continue with Liṅga-pūjā and japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” holding the intent of purification and surrender.
