Definition of Śiva’s Five Cosmic Acts—Pañcakṛtya
तस्मान्मज्ज्ञानसिद्ध्यर्थं मंत्रमओंकारनामकम् । इतः परं प्रजपतं मामकं मानभंजनम्
tasmānmajjñānasiddhyarthaṃ maṃtramaoṃkāranāmakam | itaḥ paraṃ prajapataṃ māmakaṃ mānabhaṃjanam
Therefore, for the attainment of knowledge of Me, you should henceforth recite the mantra called Oṁkāra—My own mantra—which shatters pride (ego) and brings the soul toward liberation.
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Jyotirlinga: Oṃkāreśvara
Sthala Purana: Oṃkāra is presented as Śiva’s own liberating mantra; the verse naturally resonates with the Oṃkāreśvara-kṣetra where the Praṇava is central and Śiva is worshipped as the embodiment of Oṃ.
Significance: Japa of Praṇava and darśana of Oṃkāreśvara are held to reduce ahaṅkāra (māna) and orient the jīva toward Śiva-jñāna and grace.
Mantra: Oṃ (Praṇava / Oṃkāra)
Type: gayatri
Role: liberating
The verse teaches that realization of Shiva (Pati) arises through mantra-upāsanā: japa of Oṁkāra purifies the pashu (individual soul) by breaking māna (ego), enabling true knowledge of Shiva.
Oṁkāra is a primary sonic form of Shiva and is used in Linga worship as the mantra-bīja that steadies the mind; through Saguna worship (Linga-upāsanā) supported by Oṁ-japa, the devotee is led toward Shiva-knowledge.
Daily japa of Oṁ (Oṁkāra) with concentration and humility is implied; it may be integrated with Shiva-pūjā—such as Linga abhiṣeka and mantra repetition—specifically as a discipline to dissolve ego and cultivate devotion.
