Classification of Sins / Taxonomy of Pāpa
वृषाणां वृषणान्ये च पापिष्ठा गालयंति च । वाहयंति च गां वंध्यां महानारकिनो नराः
vṛṣāṇāṃ vṛṣaṇānye ca pāpiṣṭhā gālayaṃti ca | vāhayaṃti ca gāṃ vaṃdhyāṃ mahānārakino narāḥ
Those most sinful men who castrate bulls, who drive and torment them, and who make even barren cows labor as beasts of burden—such people are destined for dreadful hells.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Paśupatinātha
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse functions as dharma-śikṣā (ethical instruction) within Umāsaṃhitā, warning that cruelty to cattle (especially bulls) accrues severe pāpa and naraka-phala.
Significance: Ethical purification for Śiva-bhakti: ahiṃsā and protection of dharma-supporting beings (go/vr̥ṣa) are presented as prerequisites for auspicious karma and eligibility for Śiva’s anugraha.
Cosmic Event: Naraka-phala (post-mortem retribution) implied; no specific cosmological event named.
The verse teaches that cruelty and exploitation—especially acts that violate dharma and cause needless suffering—create severe karmic bondage (pāśa) and lead to painful results, opposing the Shaiva ideal of purity, compassion, and self-restraint on the path toward Shiva (Pati).
Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is not merely ritual; it requires dharmic conduct. This verse underscores that devotion to Saguna Shiva must be supported by ahimsa and righteous livelihood—otherwise worship becomes hollow and cannot purify the pashu (bound soul).
Adopt ahimsa as a vrata (ethical vow) alongside Shiva-upasana—daily japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namah Shivaya) with a repentant, disciplined mind, and offerings made through non-violent, dharmic means.
