महापातकवर्णनम् (Mahāpātaka-varṇanam) — “Description of Great Sins and Their Consequences”
व्यास उवाच । ये पापनिरता जीवा महानरकहेतवः । भगवंस्तान्समाचक्ष्व ब्रह्मपुत्र नमोऽस्तु ते
vyāsa uvāca | ye pāpaniratā jīvā mahānarakahetavaḥ | bhagavaṃstānsamācakṣva brahmaputra namo'stu te
Vyāsa said: “O Blessed one, describe to me those living beings who are devoted to sin and thereby become the cause of great hells. O son of Brahmā, I bow to you.”
Vyāsa
Tattva Level: pashu
Sthala Purana: Not a jyotirliṅga episode; the verse opens an ethical-eschatological inquiry: which jīvas, by pāpa, become fit for mahānaraka.
Significance: Positions śravaṇa (listening to dharma) as a purificatory act; motivates vrata, dāna, and Śiva-bhakti as remedies to pāśa (bondage) expressed as sinful tendencies.
Mantra: namo'stu te
This verse frames a Shaiva ethical inquiry: bondage (pāśa) tightens when a being repeatedly chooses pāpa (sinful action), producing suffering-states like naraka. It prepares the listener to understand how right conduct and Shiva-oriented devotion lead toward purification and liberation.
Although the verse is a question about sinful tendencies, it sets up the remedial path typically taught in the Shiva Purana: turning from pāpa toward Dharma, devotion, and worship of Saguna Shiva (often through Linga-upāsanā) as a means of inner purification and release from karmic consequences.
Implicitly, it points to self-examination and repentance followed by Shaiva disciplines—japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), regular Shiva worship, and purificatory observances—so that one abandons pāpa-nirati (addiction to sin) and moves toward sāttvika living.
