The sage said: “Thus that Goddess arose, the slayer of the demon Śumbha. She is proclaimed to be Sarasvatī herself in manifest form—an appearance born from a portion of Umā, O King.”
The sage (ṛṣi-narrator) addressing the king
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Sarasvatī
Role: destructive
It teaches that Divine Power (Śakti) manifests in specific forms for cosmic protection: Sarasvatī here is not separate from the Supreme Goddess but appears from Umā’s own śakti to restore dharma by destroying Śumbha.
In Shaiva understanding, Saguna Shiva is worshipped together with His inseparable Śakti (Umā). This verse highlights that the Goddess’s manifest forms operate as Shiva’s power in action, complementing Linga-worship by emphasizing the unity of Pati (Shiva) and Śakti (Umā).
A practical takeaway is to worship Shiva with Umā (Uma-Maheśvara bhāva) while reciting the Panchākṣarī—“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—and cultivating śakti-awareness: seeing divine wisdom (Sarasvatī) as Umā’s grace manifesting within one’s speech, study, and mantra-japa.
