Śumbha–Niśumbha-pīḍā and Devastuti to Durgā/Śivā
Names and Forms of the Devī
इति देवैः स्तुता गौरी प्रसन्ना वरदा शिवा । प्रोवाच त्रिदशान्सर्वान्युष्माभिः स्तूयतेऽत्र का
iti devaiḥ stutā gaurī prasannā varadā śivā | provāca tridaśānsarvānyuṣmābhiḥ stūyate'tra kā
Thus praised by the gods, Gaurī—benign, gracious, and bestower of boons—became pleased. Then that auspicious Goddess spoke to all the thirty-three gods: “Who is it here that is being hymned by you?”
Gauri (Parvati)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Gaurī
Role: liberating
Offering: pushpa
The verse shows how sincere stuti (devotional praise) melts the heart of the Divine Mother (Śakti), who responds as varadā—granting grace that supports the soul’s movement toward Śiva-realization.
Though the verse centers on Gaurī, it reflects Saguna worship: the gods approach the Divine through hymns and accessible forms. In Shaiva Siddhanta, Śiva and Śakti are worshiped together—devotion to the Goddess naturally leads toward the Lord she reveals.
The takeaway is stotra-pāṭha with humility and clarity of intention—regular hymn-recitation and remembrance of the Divine as “varadā” (bestower of grace), alongside mantra-japa such as “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” to align the mind with auspiciousness (śivatva).
