Account of the Birth/Origin of Vyāsa
यमाराध्य महादेवं विद्याः सर्वा लभेमहि । पुराणकर्तृताशक्तिर्ममास्तु यदनुग्रहात्
yamārādhya mahādevaṃ vidyāḥ sarvā labhemahi | purāṇakartṛtāśaktirmamāstu yadanugrahāt
Having worshipped Mahādeva, may we obtain all sacred knowledges; and by His grace, may the power to compose a Purāṇa arise in me.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: Not a site-specific jyotirliṅga claim; rather a direct articulation of anugraha: Śiva grants sarva-vidyā and the śakti (capacity) to compose Purāṇic revelation, echoing Vyāsa-like authorship as grace-enabled.
Significance: Frames learning and authorship as fruits of Śiva’s grace, not merely human effort—aligning pilgrimage/worship with inner empowerment (śakti-pāta in a broad Purāṇic sense).
Mantra: yamārādhya mahādevaṃ vidyāḥ sarvā labhemahi | purāṇakartṛtāśaktirmamāstu yadanugrahāt
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It presents Śiva (Pati) as the giver of vidyā and spiritual capability, emphasizing that true knowledge and even scriptural expression arise through His anugraha (grace) gained by worship.
The verse frames worship (ārādhana) of Mahādeva as the means to receive divine grace; in Shiva Purana practice this is commonly expressed through Saguna devotion—especially Linga-worship—through which Śiva bestows knowledge and inner fitness.
Regular Śiva-ārādhana: japa of the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), Linga-pūjā with offerings, and a prayer for anugraha—seeking wisdom (vidyā) rather than worldly gain.
