By listing Raucyā Manu’s sons—names like Dharma, Nirbhaya, and Sutapā—the Purana frames righteous order (dharma), fearlessness, and austerity (tapas) as supports for a life that becomes fit for Shiva’s grace and liberation.
Though genealogical, the Uma Saṃhitā uses such lineages to situate the human pursuit of dharma and tapas—key qualifications for disciplined Linga-worship and devotion to Saguna Shiva that matures into knowledge of Pati (Shiva).
The name Sutapā highlights tapas: steady japa of the Panchākṣarī ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya"), along with simple Shaiva observances like Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa, performed with fearlessness (nirbhaya) and ethical restraint (dharma).
