Kṛṣṇādi-Śivabhaktoddhāraṇa & Śiva-māhātmya-varṇana
Deliverance of Krishna and other devotees; Description of Shiva’s Greatness
साम्बो नाम महावीर्यः पुत्रस्ते भविता बली । घोरसंवर्तकादित्यश्शप्तो मुनिभिरेव च
sāmbo nāma mahāvīryaḥ putraste bhavitā balī | ghorasaṃvartakādityaśśapto munibhireva ca
“A son named Sāmba—of great valor and mighty strength—will be born to you. He will also be cursed by the sages to become like the terrible Saṃvartaka Sun, blazing with destructive intensity.”
Suta Goswami (narrating the Uma Samhita account to the sages of Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
It highlights karmic law (pāśa/bondage): even a powerful birth is not beyond the moral-spiritual order upheld by sages. In Shaiva Siddhanta terms, strength without right conduct can become a cause of bondage, while Shiva’s grace is the ultimate purifier.
The verse contrasts destructive heat (saṃvartaka-like intensity) with the cooling, stabilizing refuge of Saguna Shiva worship—approaching the Linga for śānti, restraint, and purification when one is scorched by consequences of actions.
A practical takeaway is śiva-śānti: japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa, seeking inner cooling and discipline to prevent fierce, destructive tendencies from maturing.
