mahānandābhidhā kaścidveśyā śivapadādṛtā | dṛḍhātpaṇātsuprasādya śivaṃ lebhe ca sadgatim
There was a courtesan named Mahānandā who took refuge at the feet of Lord Śiva. With steadfast resolve she greatly pleased Śiva, and thus attained the true blessed state—the liberating destiny.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Significance: Teaches śaraṇāgati at Śiva’s feet (śivapāda) and dṛḍha-niścaya as sufficient for Śiva’s prasāda leading to sadgati.
Mantra: oṃ namaḥ śivāya
Type: panchakshara
Role: liberating
Offering: pushpa
It teaches that Śiva’s grace is not restricted by social identity; sincere surrender to Śiva’s feet and steadfast devotion can lead to sadgati—spiritual uplift and liberation.
The verse emphasizes pleasing Śiva through devoted worship (saguna-upāsanā). In the Shiva Purana, such devotion is commonly expressed through Liṅga worship, leading to Śiva’s prasāda (grace) and liberation.
The key practice is दृढ-भक्ति (steadfast devotion) and śaraṇāgati (taking refuge). Practically, this aligns with daily Śiva-pūjā, japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and living with a firm vow of devotion.
