Praise of Water-Gift and the Construction of Wells and Tanks
तपसा लभ्यते राज्यं स च शक्रस्सुरेश्वरः । तपसाऽपालयत्सर्वमहन्यहनि वृत्रहा
tapasā labhyate rājyaṃ sa ca śakrassureśvaraḥ | tapasā'pālayatsarvamahanyahani vṛtrahā
Through tapas sovereignty is attained; thus Śakra (Indra) became the lord of the gods. And that slayer of Vṛtra protected all things day after day by the power of tapas.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; it uses Indra’s office (sureśvara) as an example of power attained and maintained through tapas—highlighting that rulership is conditional and part of cosmic administration.
Significance: Teaches that worldly/celestial sovereignty is not intrinsic; it is sustained by discipline and merit, and thus remains within pāśa (karma/office).
Cosmic Event: Indra’s ongoing protection of worlds (lokapālana) as cyclical cosmic governance
The verse teaches that true authority and the capacity to uphold dharma arise from tapas—inner discipline and spiritual heat—rather than mere birth or force; even Indra’s lordship is presented as the fruit of sustained austerity.
In the Shaiva view, tapas becomes fruitful when oriented to Pati (Śiva) as the supreme Lord; Linga-worship and devotion to Saguna Śiva stabilize the mind, making austerity dharmic and protective rather than ego-driven.
Adopt steady tapas such as daily japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), simple vrata-like self-restraint, and regular Shiva-pūjā with bhasma (Tripuṇḍra) to cultivate disciplined protection of one’s duties.
