Praise of Water-Gift and the Construction of Wells and Tanks
व्यास उवाच । तपसो मे फलं ब्रूहि पुनरेव विशेषतः । सर्वेषां चैव वर्णानां ब्राह्मणानां तपोधन
vyāsa uvāca | tapaso me phalaṃ brūhi punareva viśeṣataḥ | sarveṣāṃ caiva varṇānāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ tapodhana
Vyāsa said: “Tell me once again—especially and in detail—the fruit of tapas (austerity): the results for all the varṇas, and in particular for the brāhmaṇas, O treasure of ascetic power.”
Vyasa
Tattva Level: pashu
The verse frames tapas as a universal purifier whose fruits vary by aptitude and duty, preparing the seeker for Shiva-bhakti and the loosening of pasha (bondage) so that grace and liberation become accessible.
By asking for the ‘fruit of tapas,’ Vyāsa points to the inner discipline that makes external worship fruitful—tapas steadies the mind and senses so Linga-worship and devotion to Saguna Shiva mature into deeper realization.
The verse implies disciplined austerity—regular japa (especially Shiva-mantra), purity observances, and restrained living—performed according to one’s dharma to support focused meditation and worship.
