Dharmas that Grant Ease on the Path to Yama
देवाग्निगुरुविप्राणां मातापित्रोश्च पूजकाः । पूज्यमाना नरा यांति कामुकेन यथासुखम्
devāgniguruviprāṇāṃ mātāpitrośca pūjakāḥ | pūjyamānā narā yāṃti kāmukena yathāsukham
Those men who worship the Devas, the sacred fire, the Guru, the Brahmins, and their own mother and father—being themselves honored in return—attain their cherished aims and move through life as they desire, in accordance with rightful happiness.
Suta Goswami (narrating Shiva Purana teachings to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: General dharma teaching: honoring devas, agni, guru, vipras, and parents is a ladder of right-relationship that purifies the paśu and loosens pāśa (karmic bondage).
Significance: Positions guru-bhakti and pitṛ-mātṛ-sevā as foundational to Śiva’s grace; such conduct is said to yield iṣṭa-siddhi (desired lawful aims) and social honor.
Offering: dhupa
It teaches that reverence to sacred authorities—Devas, Agni, the Guru, Brahmins, and especially one’s parents—purifies conduct and aligns one’s life with dharma, making one fit to receive auspicious results (and ultimately Shiva’s grace).
Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is not isolated from ethics: honoring Guru, elders, and sacred fire supports inner purity (śuddhi) and humility, which are required for fruitful Saguna Shiva worship and for the devotion that ripens toward realization.
Practice daily reverence: offer respectful salutations and service to parents and Guru, honor Brahmins/learned devotees, and maintain sacred discipline around worship (including lamp/fire offerings). This dharmic foundation strengthens mantra-japa and puja.
