भैरवावतारवर्णनम् (Bhairavāvatāra-varṇanam) — “Description of the Descent/Manifestation of Bhairava”
आमर्दयिष्यति भवान्रुष्टो दुष्टात्मनो यतः । आमर्दक इति ख्यातिं ततस्सर्वत्र यास्यसि
āmardayiṣyati bhavānruṣṭo duṣṭātmano yataḥ | āmardaka iti khyātiṃ tatassarvatra yāsyasi
Because, when angered, you will crush the wicked-minded, you shall thereafter become renowned everywhere by the name “Āmardaka” (the Crusher).
Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Kālabhairava
Role: destructive
The verse frames Shiva’s fierce action as compassionate protection: the “crushing” is the removal of wickedness (adharma) and, inwardly, the destruction of the seeker’s hostile egoic impulses that bind the soul (pāśa), allowing dharma and liberation-oriented life to flourish.
It highlights Saguna Shiva—Shiva with attributes—who actively safeguards devotees and the cosmic order. In Linga worship, devotees contemplate the same Lord as both transcendent (nirguṇa) and manifest protector (saguṇa), whose grace can appear as stern correction against evil.
A practical takeaway is to chant the Panchākṣarī mantra (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while meditating on Shiva’s protective aspect, praying that inner “wicked-mindedness” (anger, cruelty, deceit) be crushed; optionally accompany with Tripuṇḍra bhasma and Rudrākṣa as Shaiva supports for discipline and purity.
