Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity

Having gone there, the sages conducted their examination with reverent care; yet, even with great effort, they could not fathom her true state.

Sthala Purana: The Saptarṣis’ inability to ‘fathom’ Pārvatī’s inner state underscores the superhuman purity of her tapas; such episodes often sacralize the tapas-sthala as beyond ordinary assessment, fit for Śiva’s direct bestowal of grace.
Significance: Encourages humility: even great sages cannot measure the depth of true devotion and tapas; inspires seekers to rely on Śiva’s anugraha rather than social validation.
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It highlights that even learned sages can be limited in grasping divine reality; in Shaiva Siddhanta, true understanding ripens through grace (anugraha), humility, and devotion rather than intellect alone.
The verse supports the Shaiva approach of approaching the Infinite through reverent, Saguna worship—such as Shiva-Linga upasana—because the Divine cannot be fully measured by ordinary inquiry, but is accessible through bhakti and right ritual.
Adopt a bhakti-centered discipline: daily Panchakshara japa ("Om Namaḥ Śivāya") with humility, and steady upasana rather than pride in learning; let inquiry be supported by surrender.
