उपमन्युकुमारस्य क्षीरार्थ-प्रार्थना तथा शिवप्रसाद-निबन्धनम् | Upamanyu’s Longing for Milk and the Doctrine of Shiva’s Grace
पिताहन्ते महादेवो माता ते जगदम्बिका । वरान्वरय सुप्रीत्या मनोभिलषितान्परान्
pitāhante mahādevo mātā te jagadambikā | varānvaraya suprītyā manobhilaṣitānparān
Your father is Mahādeva, and your mother is Jagadambikā. Therefore, with glad devotion, choose the supreme boons your heart truly longs for.
Lord Shiva (Mahadeva)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: nurturing
It presents Śiva and Jagadambikā as the ultimate divine parents and teaches that true fulfillment comes by seeking the highest boons—those aligned with dharma, devotion, and liberation—rather than merely worldly gains.
The verse reflects Saguna Śiva’s accessible, personal grace: the devotee can directly approach Mahādeva (as worshipped in the Liṅga) and, through loving devotion, receive blessings that culminate in spiritual uplift.
Approach Śiva with suprīti (devotional joy) through japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” offering bilva leaves and, where appropriate, wearing rudrākṣa and applying tripuṇḍra—then pray specifically for the ‘para’ (highest) boon: steadiness in bhakti and freedom from bondage.
