अवधूतेश्वरलीला (Avadhūteśvara-līlā) — Śiva Tests Indra’s Pride on the Way to Kailāsa
समुद्भूतोऽनलो योयं भालनेत्रात्सुरा सहः । एनन्त्यक्ष्याम्यहं दूरे यथेन्द्रं नैव पीडयेत्
samudbhūto'nalo yoyaṃ bhālanetrātsurā sahaḥ | enantyakṣyāmyahaṃ dūre yathendraṃ naiva pīḍayet
“O gods, this blazing fire has arisen from the eye in the Lord’s forehead. I shall drive it far away, so that it may not afflict Indra at all.”
Vishnu
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Bhairava
Significance: Depicts the third-eye fire as Śiva’s saṃhāric tejas; its ‘driving away’ illustrates divine governance over destructive power so it does not harm a devotee—protective grace operating upon dissolution-energy.
It presents Shiva’s third eye as the power of transcendent awareness that can manifest as consuming fire—symbolizing the burning of ego and impurity—while also showing that divine energies must be approached with reverence and right order.
The third eye is a Saguna marker of Shiva’s sovereign power (aiśvarya) and jñāna; Linga worship similarly honors that supreme Reality in a form accessible to devotees, reminding worshippers that Shiva’s grace and power can both protect and transform.
Meditate on Shiva as the inner light of discernment (jñāna) that burns impurities; in practice, chant the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and a calm mind, seeking protection and purification rather than worldly power.
