Bhairavaśāpavṛttāntaḥ
The Episode of Bhairava’s Curse and Consolation
तच्छापाद्भैरवस्सोथ क्षिताववतरन्मुने । मनुष्ययोन्यां वैतालसंज्ञकश्शंकरेच्छया

O sage, as the fruit of that curse, Bhairava then descended upon the earth; by Śaṅkara’s own will he was born from a human womb, known by the name Vaitāla.

The verse shows that even a fearsome divine power like Bhairava can accept embodied existence, illustrating how karmic consequences (a curse) operate under the higher governance of Śiva’s will—guiding events toward restoration of dharma and spiritual instruction.
Bhairava is a Saguna manifestation connected to Śiva’s protective and corrective power. Remembering such descents strengthens devotion to Śiva in form (Saguna), which in Shaiva practice culminates in steadiness of worship—often centered on the Śiva-liṅga as the most accessible focus of Śiva’s presence.
A practical takeaway is to worship Śiva with the Panchākṣarī mantra (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while contemplating Śiva’s sovereignty over karma—offering repentance and surrender; if following Purāṇic Shaiva custom, this may be supported by Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa as aids to remembrance.
