सङ्ख्या विशक्यते कर्तुं सुप्राज्ञैर्बहुजन्मभिः । शिवावताराणां नैव सत्यं जानीहि मद्वचः
saṅkhyā viśakyate kartuṃ suprājñairbahujanmabhiḥ | śivāvatārāṇāṃ naiva satyaṃ jānīhi madvacaḥ
“Even the most discerning sages, though endowed with wisdom across many births, can scarcely compute their number. The incarnations and manifestations of Lord Śiva are truly beyond counting—know this as the truth of my words.”
Suta Goswami (narrating the Shiva Purana to the sages at Naimisharanya, within the Shatarudra Samhita’s discourse on Shiva’s countless forms)
Tattva Level: pati
Sthala Purana: General assertion of ananta (endlessness) of Śiva’s manifestations; no single kṣetra indicated.
Significance: Cultivates śraddhā: liberation is not by exhaustive conceptual mastery but by turning to Pati’s grace; the verse redirects from ‘counting’ to ‘knowing’ (jānīhi) through trust in śāstra and guru-vākya.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It teaches that Śiva’s power of manifestation is limitless; the seeker should move from intellectual counting to reverent contemplation and devotion, recognizing the Infinite Pati (Lord) beyond the grasp of mere enumeration.
Because Śiva’s forms are innumerable, the Linga functions as the universal, all-form symbol through which devotees worship Saguna Śiva while remembering the same Reality is ultimately Nirguna—beyond form and count.
Instead of trying to ‘count’ forms, practice japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with steady bhakti, and meditate on the Linga as the one doorway to the many manifestations of Śiva.
