Chapter on the Ordinance of Initiation
तद्रूपं च तदा दृष्ट्वा मोहितो मायया तथा । उवाच वचनं तस्मै नमस्कृत्य महात्मने
tadrūpaṃ ca tadā dṛṣṭvā mohito māyayā tathā | uvāca vacanaṃ tasmai namaskṛtya mahātmane
Seeing that very form then, he was deluded by Māyā. Bowing in reverence to that great-souled one, he spoke words to him.
Suta Goswami (narrating to the sages at Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shakti Form: Durgā
Role: teaching
It highlights how Māyā can bewilder even a capable person when confronted with a divine manifestation, and how humility (namaskāra) becomes the doorway to right understanding and grace in the Shaiva path.
The verse shows the devotee’s movement from confusion to reverent address upon beholding a sacred form—mirroring how Saguna Shiva worship (including Linga worship) stabilizes the mind and turns it from Māyā toward Shiva as Pati (the Lord).
The immediate takeaway is namaskāra (prostration) and devotional surrender; in practice this aligns with daily Shiva upāsanā such as offering salutations, japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and centering the mind to see beyond Māyā.
