द्वन्द्वयुद्धवर्णनम् / Description of the Duel-Combats
तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवानुद्रो महालीलाकरः प्रभुः । अभयं दत्तवांस्तेभ्यो महोत्साहं प्रवर्द्धयन्
tacchrutvā bhagavānudro mahālīlākaraḥ prabhuḥ | abhayaṃ dattavāṃstebhyo mahotsāhaṃ pravarddhayan
Hearing that, the Blessed Lord Rudra—the sovereign who performs great divine play—granted them fearlessness, thereby increasing their great courage.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
The verse highlights Śiva’s anugraha (grace): when the Lord bestows abhaya, inner fear born of limitation (paśutva) subsides and spiritual courage rises, enabling steadfastness in dharma and devotion.
It reflects Saguna Śiva’s compassionate, personal lordship— the worshipper approaches the Linga/Lord for śaraṇāgati (refuge), and the Lord responds with protection and assurance, strengthening the devotee’s resolve.
Take refuge in Śiva through japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with a prayer for abhaya; optionally apply tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and meditate on Śiva as the protector who increases sattvic courage.
