त्रिपुरवर्णनम् (Tripura-varṇanam) — “Description of Tripura”
संयमात्क्षुत्तृषो जित्वा पानान्युच्चावचान्यपि । बुभुक्षितेभ्यो दत्त्वा तु बुभूवुरुपला इव
saṃyamātkṣuttṛṣo jitvā pānānyuccāvacānyapi | bubhukṣitebhyo dattvā tu bubhūvurupalā iva
Through self-restraint they conquered hunger and thirst, and even the lure of various drinks. Giving those drinks to the hungry instead, they became like stones—unmoved and unshaken by craving.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It teaches saṃyama (disciplined restraint) and dāna (giving) as marks of inner Shaiva strength—desire is mastered, and the mind becomes steady and unreactive, fit for Shiva-bhakti and liberation.
Linga-worship is not only ritual but a transformation of conduct: offering up personal cravings and serving others purifies the devotee, making the heart a worthy seat for Saguna Shiva’s grace and the dawning of higher realization.
Practice moderation/fasting according to capacity, redirect comforts into charity, and stabilize the mind with japa of “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” so cravings subside and one becomes steady ‘like a rock’ in devotion.
