Gotra–Pravara Inquiry and Proclamation of Auspicious Time
इत्थं शिवाकरं शैलं शिवहस्तेनिधाय च । मुमोदातीव मनसि तीर्णकाममहार्णवः
itthaṃ śivākaraṃ śailaṃ śivahastenidhāya ca | mumodātīva manasi tīrṇakāmamahārṇavaḥ
Thus, placing that mountain—made auspicious by Śiva’s own touch—into Śiva’s hand, he rejoiced deeply in his heart, as one who has crossed the vast ocean of desire.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga passage; it poetically depicts the inner fruit (phala) of completing the rite—crossing the ‘ocean of desire’—a Siddhānta-friendly image of desire’s pacification through right action and Śiva’s touch.
Significance: Devotionally read as assurance that aligning one’s duties with Śiva’s will brings inner release (vairāgya/śānti), a foretaste of liberation.
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It presents Śiva as Pati (the Lord) whose sanctifying presence and grace enable the devotee to transcend kāma (desire), resulting in inner joy—an indicator of loosening pāśa (bondage) and moving toward liberation.
The verse emphasizes Śiva’s tangible, grace-filled presence (Saguna Śiva): what is ‘touched by Śiva’ becomes śivākara—auspicious and transformative—mirroring how Linga-worship sanctifies the devotee’s mind and redirects desire into devotion.
Contemplate Śiva’s ‘hand’ as grace while doing japa of the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and cultivate vairāgya by observing desire as an ocean to be crossed through devotion and disciplined remembrance.
