मेना-शिवदर्शन-प्रस्थानम् | Menā’s Quest to Behold Śiva
Departure for Śiva’s Darśana
तावच्चन्द्रस्समायातश्शोभा तद्द्विगुणा दधत । दृष्ट्वा तं प्राह रुद्रोऽयं तां तु नेति त्वमब्रवीः
tāvaccandrassamāyātaśśobhā taddviguṇā dadhata | dṛṣṭvā taṃ prāha rudro'yaṃ tāṃ tu neti tvamabravīḥ
Just then the Moon arrived, bearing a splendor twice as great. Seeing him, Rudra said, “This is the one,” but you replied of her, “No—not this.”
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: liberating
It highlights discernment in divine matters: even when an entity appears radiant (like the Moon), the right spiritual choice is not decided by outer splendor but by alignment with dharma and the Lord’s intent—Rudra’s leela guiding the destined outcome.
Rudra’s speaking and choosing within the narrative reflects Saguna Shiva’s accessible, relational form—through which devotees understand the Lord’s will. Linga worship similarly trains the devotee to look beyond appearances and fix the mind on Shiva as Pati, the supreme guide.
A practical takeaway is japa with the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) while cultivating viveka (discernment): do not be led by mere brilliance; offer the mind to Shiva with steady devotion, optionally with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa as Shaiva supports.
