मेना-शिवदर्शन-प्रस्थानम् | Menā’s Quest to Behold Śiva
Departure for Śiva’s Darśana
तावद्यमस्समायातस्ततोऽपि द्विगुणप्रभः । तं दृष्ट्वा प्राह सा मेना रुद्रोऽयमिति हर्षिता
tāvadyamassamāyātastato'pi dviguṇaprabhaḥ | taṃ dṛṣṭvā prāha sā menā rudro'yamiti harṣitā
Just then Yama arrived, his radiance doubled. Seeing him, Menā joyfully exclaimed, “This is Rudra (Śiva)!”
Suta Goswami (narrating the Purana’s account to the sages, with Menā’s exclamation quoted)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: nurturing
The verse highlights how ordinary perception can mistake power and radiance for the Supreme; Shaiva Siddhanta emphasizes that true recognition of Pati (Śiva) arises through grace and devotion, not merely by outward brilliance.
Menā’s identification reflects Saguna-upāsanā: the devotee learns to recognize Rudra through marks of divine presence. Linga worship similarly trains the mind to see Śiva as the indwelling Lord beyond changing forms and appearances.
A practical takeaway is japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to refine discernment, along with simple Śiva-smaraṇa (remembrance) that removes fear of death symbolized by Yama.
