पूर्वगतिवर्णनम् (Pūrvagati-varṇana) — “Description of the Prior Course / Earlier Lineage Account”
नारद उवाच । विधे प्राज्ञ वदेदानीं मेनोत्पत्तिं समादरात् । अपि शापं समाचक्ष्व कुरु संदेहभंजनम्
nārada uvāca | vidhe prājña vadedānīṃ menotpattiṃ samādarāt | api śāpaṃ samācakṣva kuru saṃdehabhaṃjanam
Nārada said: “O wise Vidhātr̥ (Brahmā), now tell me with reverent care the account of Menā’s origin. Also explain the matter of the curse, and thus shatter my doubt.”
Nārada
Tattva Level: pashu
Role: teaching
It highlights śraddhā-filled inquiry: sincere questioning to a competent teacher removes saṃdeha (doubt), preparing the mind to receive Shaiva teachings that lead toward clarity and devotion to Śiva.
Though not naming the Liṅga directly, the verse sets the narrative foundation for Pārvatī’s lineage; understanding her origin supports Saguna Śiva-bhakti by deepening reverence for Śiva’s divine household and līlā.
Śravaṇa (devotional listening) and praśna (humble inquiry) are implied—approach sacred narration with respect, ask to remove doubts, and contemplate the teaching as a form of bhakti-sādhana.
