Having gone to Madhuvana, faithfully obeying the command of the guru, he undertook a most severe austerity, performed in full accordance with the prescribed rites, keeping the divine ordinance in view.

Tattva Level: pasha
Sthala Purana: Madhuvana is portrayed as a potent tapas-kṣetra where severe austerities bear fruit quickly; Tāraka chooses it as an efficacious field for boon-seeking.
Significance: Tapas-kṣetra symbolism: places of disciplined practice amplify saṅkalpa; in Śaiva reading, such potency still requires right orientation toward Śiva for liberating outcome.
It teaches that austerity becomes spiritually transformative when it is grounded in guru-obedience and performed according to śāstric injunction (vidhi), aligning personal effort with Shiva’s dharmic order.
By emphasizing vidhivat practice, it points to disciplined, rite-aligned devotion—such as Linga worship with proper mantras and observances—through which Saguna Shiva’s grace is invoked and spiritual maturity is gained.
The takeaway is to perform tapas with prescribed discipline—regular japa (especially the Panchakshara), purity rules, and regulated worship—under guidance of a competent guru rather than self-willed practice.
