Brāhmaṇī-Svargati-Varṇana: Account of a Brāhmaṇa Woman’s Ascent to Heaven
अहं कुतस्ते पुत्रोद्य त्वं माता कुत एव च । वृथाभिमानः पुत्रत्वे मातृत्वे च विचार्य्यताम्
ahaṃ kutaste putrodya tvaṃ mātā kuta eva ca | vṛthābhimānaḥ putratve mātṛtve ca vicāryyatām
“How am I your son at all? And how are you my mother? Let this vain pride of ‘sonhood’ and ‘motherhood’ be examined and set aside.”
Lord Shiva (teaching detachment from worldly identity)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It teaches vairagya and viveka: worldly roles like “mother” and “son” are temporary identifications, while the true Self is to be known by turning to Shiva (Pati) beyond ego and attachment.
Linga-worship trains the mind to move from personal, possessive identities to the universal Lord; by contemplating Shiva as the inner witness, the devotee loosens pasha (bondage) created by relational pride.
Practice japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with meditation on letting go of ‘I’ and ‘mine’; apply Tripundra (bhasma) as a reminder of impermanence and cultivate dispassion.
