Brāhmaṇī-Svargati-Varṇana: Account of a Brāhmaṇa Woman’s Ascent to Heaven
सूत उवाच । एवं श्रुत्वा स्वपुत्रस्य वचनं ज्ञानगर्भितम् । पुत्रशोकान्विता दीना सा च गौरब्रवीदिदम्
sūta uvāca | evaṃ śrutvā svaputrasya vacanaṃ jñānagarbhitam | putraśokānvitā dīnā sā ca gaurabravīdidam
Sūta said: Having thus heard her own son’s words—filled with spiritual discernment—Gaurī, afflicted by grief for her child and overcome with sorrow, spoke these words.
Suta Goswami
Shakti Form: Gaurī
Role: nurturing
It contrasts jñāna (wisdom-filled counsel) with human sorrow, showing that even exalted beings like Gaurī move through grief—yet the narrative turns grief into a doorway for higher Shaiva understanding and dharmic action.
As a narrative bridge, it prepares for Gaurī’s response within a Saguna-Shiva devotional framework: emotions and relationships are not rejected, but refined into devotion that ultimately points toward Shiva’s grace and liberation.
The verse implies cultivating steadiness in sorrow through remembrance of Shiva—practically expressed in japa of the Panchākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and prayerful surrender, even when the story context is emotionally intense.
