ṛṣaya ucuḥ | udyāpanavidhiṃ brūhi śivarātrivratasya ca | yatkṛtvā śaṃkarassākṣātprasanno bhavati dhuvam
The sages said: “Tell us also the procedure for the udyāpana, the concluding observance of the Śivarātri vow—by performing which Śaṅkara Himself becomes certainly and directly pleased.”
The sages (ṛṣis) at Naimiṣāraṇya
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Highlights udyāpana (formal completion) as the act that seals the vrata and invokes Śiva’s direct prasāda—mirroring Siddhānta stress on proper kriyā culminating in grace.
This verse highlights that devotion expressed through a complete and properly concluded vow (vrata with udyāpana) is a direct means to gain Śiva’s grace, emphasizing bhakti and disciplined observance as channels for divine favor.
By asking for the udyāpana of Śivarātri, the sages point to Saguna worship—ritual completion, offerings, and formal closure—typically centered on Śiva’s presence as the Liṅga and the Lord who responds to sincere, rule-guided devotion.
The verse specifically indicates udyāpana (the concluding rite) of the Śivarātri vrata—implying completion of the vow with prescribed worship and offerings; meditative support may include japa of Śiva’s names or the Pañcākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) as part of the observance.
