Śivapūjā-stuti: Deva-Ṛṣi-Paramparāyāṃ Śaṃkara-caritasya Prastāvaḥ
Prelude to Śaṃkara’s narrative and the lineage of Śiva-worship
अजश्शिवार्चकस्तस्य तनयो धर्मयुद्धकृत् । जातो दशरथो भूयो महाराजो विशेषतः
ajaśśivārcakastasya tanayo dharmayuddhakṛt | jāto daśaratho bhūyo mahārājo viśeṣataḥ
Aja was a devoted worshipper of Śiva. From him was born Daśaratha, a doer of righteous warfare; indeed he became an especially eminent great king.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Connects Śiva worship with dharmic kingship: devotion stabilizes (sthiti) righteous rule and frames warfare as dharma-yuddha under divine oversight.
It presents Śiva-bhakti as the root of dharmic strength: devotion to Pati (Śiva) supports right conduct in the world, producing rulers who protect dharma while remaining oriented toward liberation.
By calling Aja a “śivārcaka” (worshipper of Śiva), the verse implies concrete worship (arcana) of Saguna Śiva—commonly expressed in Purāṇic practice through Liṅga-pūjā, offerings, and daily reverence.
Regular Śiva-arcana with mantra-japa—especially the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”)—as a householder’s discipline to keep one’s actions aligned with dharma.
