अविमुक्तक्षेत्रमाहात्म्य
The Greatness of Avimukta–Vārāṇasī and Viśveśvara
अतः परं प्रवक्ष्यामि माहात्म्यं त्र्यंबकस्य च । यच्छ्रुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते मानवः क्षणात्
ataḥ paraṃ pravakṣyāmi māhātmyaṃ tryaṃbakasya ca | yacchrutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate mānavaḥ kṣaṇāt
Now, further, I shall proclaim the sacred glory of Tryambaka (Lord Śiva). Hearing it, a human being is instantly released from all sins.
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Tryambaka
Jyotirlinga: Tryambakeśvara
Sthala Purana: Tryambaka’s māhātmya is introduced as a sin-destroying hearing (śravaṇa) that grants immediate pāpa-kṣaya; the Tryambakeśvara kṣetra is traditionally linked with sacred waters and purificatory merit.
Significance: Śravaṇa of the māhātmya and darśana of the jyotirliṅga are held to remove sins and support both purification and liberation-oriented devotion.
Type: mahamrityunjaya
Role: liberating
It declares that śravaṇa (devotional listening) to Śiva’s māhātmya is itself a purifying sādhanā: by the Lord’s grace, the devotee’s pāpa is burned and the path toward liberation is opened.
Tryambaka is praised as the accessible, saguna form of Śiva who bestows grace through sacred narratives and tīrtha-glories; hearing such praise supports Linga-bhakti by deepening reverence and faith in Śiva’s saving presence.
The direct practice is śravaṇa of Shiva-kathā (listening/recitation). As a takeaway, one may hear or recite Tryambaka-stuti while japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to internalize the teaching.
