Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Jyotirlinga: Somanātha
Sthala Purana: Phalaśruti: śravaṇa/śrāvaṇa of the Someśvara-udbhava grants kāma-siddhi and pāpa-vimocana—typical of kṣetra-māhātmya sections that present hearing as a salvific act.
Significance: Hearing/reciting the origin story functions as a non-physical pilgrimage (mānasa-yātrā), conferring merit, purification, and eligibility for deeper Śiva-bhakti.
Role: liberating
It teaches that śravaṇa (devout hearing) and śrāvaṇa (enabling others to hear) of Shiva’s sacred manifestation narratives purify karma, remove pāpa, and support both worldly well-being and spiritual upliftment under Shiva’s grace.
In the Kotirudra context, the “origin account” points to the Jyotirlinga’s appearance—Saguna Shiva revealing Himself in a worshipable form—so hearing its mahātmya becomes an act of bhakti that connects the devotee to the Linga’s sanctifying power.
Regular recitation/reading aloud of the Jyotirlinga-utpatti (origin) section—especially on Mondays or Mahāśivarātri—and arranging group listening (satsaṅga) as a simple, meritorious Shaiva practice.
