ज्योतिर्लिङ्गमाहात्म्य-प्रस्तावना तथा सोमनाथ-प्रसङ्गः
Prologue to the Glory and Origin of the Jyotirliṅgas; Somnātha Episode Begins
देवाः ऊचुः । देवदेव महादेव परमेश नमोऽस्तु ते । उमया सहितश्शंभो स्वामिन्नत्र स्थिरो भव
devāḥ ūcuḥ | devadeva mahādeva parameśa namo'stu te | umayā sahitaśśaṃbho svāminnatra sthiro bhava
The Devas said: “O God of gods, O Mahādeva, O Supreme Lord—salutations to You. O Śambhu, together with Umā, O Master, be firmly established here.”
The Devas (gods)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Jyotirlinga: Somanātha
Sthala Purana: The Devas pray that Śiva, together with Umā, become firmly established at that spot; this anticipates the Lord’s abiding presence as Someshvara/Candraśekhara, sanctifying the kṣetra and granting relief from afflictions.
Significance: Darśana and worship of the established Lord is sought for protection, stability of dharma, and the Lord’s gracious abiding presence in the kṣetra.
Mantra: देवदेव महादेव परमेश नमोऽस्तु ते । उमया सहितश्शंभो स्वामिन्नत्र स्थिरो भव
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Umā
Role: nurturing
It expresses bhakti and śaraṇāgati (surrender): the Devas praise Shiva as the Supreme Lord and pray that His grace-filled presence remain “here,” indicating the sanctification of a sacred site by Shiva’s abiding power (śakti) together with Umā.
The request that Shiva “be firmly established here” aligns with the Shaiva understanding of Saguna Shiva being invoked to dwell in a particular kṣetra—classically through the liṅga—so devotees may approach, worship, and receive anugraha (divine grace).
A simple practice is to offer namaskāra and recite Shiva’s names (e.g., “Mahādeva, Parameśa, Śambhu”) with the intention of inviting His presence; this pairs naturally with japa of the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” during pūjā or Mahāśivarātri worship.
