Having placed the common arghya-vessel, one should worship it with sandalpaste and the like; then, filling it with pure water, one should place the prescribed offering/substance into that vessel.

Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Tatpuruṣa
It teaches that worship begins with sanctifying the instruments of offering—purity (śuddha-toya) and reverent upacāras prepare the devotee’s mind for devoted approach to Pati, Lord Shiva.
Arghya and related offerings are standard upacāras in Saguna Shiva/Linga worship; honoring the vessel and offering with purity supports focused bhakti and disciplined ritual attention to Shiva’s manifest form.
A practical puja step: establish the arghya vessel, worship it with fragrance (gandha, etc.), fill it with pure water, and place the intended offering—done with mantra-recitation (often the Panchakshara, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and steady devotion.
