Having duly informed the Guru and obtained his permission, he then sat in posture with the vital breath restrained—self-possessed and master of the senses.

Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
It teaches that authentic Shaiva sādhanā begins with humility toward the Guru and culminates in inner mastery—breath regulation, mental conquest, and sense-restraint—so the seeker becomes fit to realize Pati (Śiva) beyond the bonds (pāśa).
Even when worship is directed to Saguna Śiva (such as the Liṅga), the verse emphasizes the required inner discipline: controlled prāṇa and senses stabilize attention so devotion becomes steady and the mind can rest in Śiva during japa, dhyāna, and pūjā.
A guru-guided practice of seated meditation with prāṇāyāma (breath-restraint) and indriya-nigraha (sense-control), supporting mantra-japa—classically the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—and sustained dhyāna on Śiva.
