Thus the cognitive senses were described in due order—beginning with hearing and the rest. Thereafter, from the vaikarika (sāttvika) aspect of ahaṅkāra, the subtle elements, the tanmātras, arose one after another.

FAQs

It frames bondage (paśutva) in terms of tattvas: when cognition runs outward through the senses and their subtle objects, awareness is dispersed. Shaiva teaching uses this map so the seeker can reverse the flow—withdraw from indriyas and tanmātras and rest in Pati (Śiva) through yoga and devotion.

Linga-worship gathers the scattered indriyas into a single sacred focus. By offering sound (mantra), form (darśana), scent (gandha), and other sense-objects to the Linga, the same tanmātras that bind are ritually purified and redirected toward Saguna Śiva, preparing the mind for inner stillness.

A practical takeaway is pratyāhāra (sense-withdrawal) supported by japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.” During pūjā, apply bhasma (tripuṇḍra) and use rudrākṣa while keeping attention from sense-objects back to Śiva as the indwelling witness.
