न ममेति वदेत्पश्चादुद्देशत्याग ईरितः । अतः परं विविद्यैति कपोतकायेति मन्त्रयोः
na mameti vadetpaścāduddeśatyāga īritaḥ | ataḥ paraṃ vividyaiti kapotakāyeti mantrayoḥ
Afterwards one should utter, “Not mine,”—this is declared to be the renunciation of appropriation. Thereafter, one should correctly learn and apply the two mantras beginning with “kapotakāya…”.
Suta Goswami (narrating the Kailasha Samhita teaching to the sages of Naimisharanya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Mantra: na mama (uddeśa-tyāga); “kapotakāya …” (two mantras indicated but not fully quoted)
Role: teaching
It instructs the seeker to dissolve “mamatā” (the sense of ‘mine-ness’) by affirming “na mameti,” a key Shaiva discipline that loosens pāśa (bondage) and prepares the mind for mantra-sādhana leading toward Shiva-realization.
Linga-worship is not only external offering but inner surrender; saying “not mine” converts ritual into true devotion by offering the ego’s ownership back to Pati (Shiva), the Lord of all, making Saguna worship a doorway to higher knowledge.
A practice of verbal and mental renunciation—repeating “na mameti” before further mantra-recitation—followed by learning and applying the prescribed pair of mantras (“kapotakāya…”), indicating a sequential discipline: tyāga first, mantra next.
