Vāmadeva-mata: Rahasya-upadeśa
The Esoteric Teaching of Vāmadeva’s Doctrine
पुरा रथन्तरे कल्पे वामदेवो महामुनिः । गर्भमुक्तश्शिवज्ञानविदां गुरुतमस्स्वयम्
purā rathantare kalpe vāmadevo mahāmuniḥ | garbhamuktaśśivajñānavidāṃ gurutamassvayam
In the ancient Rathantara Kalpa, there was the great sage Vāmadeva—himself liberated even while in the womb—who became, of his own accord, the foremost guru among the knowers of Śiva’s wisdom.

Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Vāmadeva
Sthala Purana: Kalpa-setting (Rathantara-kalpa) functions as mythic time-marker rather than a jyotirliṅga origin.
Significance: Highlights the paradigm of the jñānī-guru: remembrance of such gurus is itself a tīrtha of mind (mānasa-tīrtha), inspiring seekers toward Śiva-jñāna.
Role: teaching
Cosmic Event: Rathantara Kalpa (kalpa-specific epoch marker)
It establishes Śiva-jñāna as the highest liberating knowledge and presents Vāmadeva as an archetypal Śaiva guru—one who embodies innate freedom and transmits Śiva’s wisdom for the soul’s release from pāśa (bondage).
By highlighting the primacy of Śiva-jñāna, the verse implies that external worship—such as Linga-pūjā to Saguna Śiva—reaches fulfillment when guided by a true guru, transforming ritual devotion into direct realization of Pati (Śiva) beyond bondage.
Seek guru-guided Śiva-upāsanā: daily Linga worship with mantra-japa (especially the Panchākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and contemplative inquiry into Śiva as Pati, so devotion matures into liberating Śiva-jñāna.
