This passage belongs to that summit of rasa in the Bāla Kāṇḍa where the scenes of the wedding-procession spread bhakti-rasa through society. The dominant flavor is not mere śṛṅgāra (romance), but the “bhakti-ānanda” that rests upon śṛṅgāra—supreme bliss born of the sweetness of divine form; the supporting rasas are utsāha (exultant energy), adbhuta (wonder), and light hāsya (playful mirth) in the city’s bustle, music, and welcoming rites. The mutual talk of the women of Janakpur becomes the language of satsang: counting it the fruit of their past merit, they call the darśan of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa a “gain of the eyes.” The astonishment of the assembly of gods (Śiva, Brahmā and others) proves that this līlā is not worldly—it is the epiphany of the transcendent Saguṇa Brahman. Here Tulsī practices the union of Nirguṇa and Saguṇa through contemplation of beauty: description of form gathers the mind into one-pointedness, and that very one-pointedness becomes the ground for nāma-smaraṇa. Thus this section fashions, within the kāṇḍa’s staircase, a gradual ascent: “purification of mind → longing for darśan → auspicious observance → surrender to God.”

Sita is the very embodiment of Janaka's merit, and Rama is the embodiment of Dasharatha's merit, who has taken a bodily form. No one has worshipped Shiva as these two have, and no one has won a reward equal to theirs. No one equal to them has ever been born in the world; there is none anywhere now, and there never will be. All of us are a heap of merit, for we have been born in the world as dwellers in Janakapura. We have seen the beauty of Janaki and Rama; who is so meritorious as we are, and so specially favoured? Then we shall also see the wedding of the Hero of the Raghus, and gain the full reward of our eyes. The women with voices sweet as the cuckoo's say to one another, "O fair-eyed one, there is great gain for us in this marriage." "By great good fortune the Creator has arranged this matter, and the two brothers will become guests of our eyes."

There will be hospitality of many kinds. Who, dear mother, does not hold dear such a father-in-law's house? Then, whenever they look upon Rama and Lakshmana, all the people of the city will be happy. Friend, just as Rama and Lakshmana are a pair, so too are the two boys who are with the king. One is dark and one is fair, and lovely in every limb. All who have come and seen them say so. One woman said, "I saw them today. It seemed as if Brahma had fashioned them with his own hands. Bharata is the very likeness of Rama; men and women cannot tell them apart at a sudden glance. Lakshmana and Shatrughna are of one form, peerless in every limb from the nails to the crown of the head. They delight the heart, and their beauty cannot be described in words. There is no comparison for them anywhere in the three worlds."

Tulsidas says that no comparison can be found anywhere, though poets and the learned may search for one. In strength, humility, learning, virtue and beauty, these four are oceans, and they have no equals but themselves. All the women of the city spread out the edges of their garments and make their petition to Brahma: "May all four brothers be married in this very city, and may we sing the auspicious wedding songs."

In this way they all cherished their heart's desires, and joy welled up again and again and filled their hearts. The kings who had come to Sita's svayamvara were all delighted at the sight of the brothers. Speaking of Rama's pure and far-reaching fame, the lords of the earth went each to his own home. In this manner some days passed, with the townspeople and all the wedding guests full of delight. Then came the day of the wedding, the root of all blessings, in the cold season, in the lovely month of Aghan. Brahma considered and fixed the date after examining the planets, the lunar day, the star, the conjunction and the best day of the week. He sent that very reckoning through Narada, and it was the same that Janaka's astrologers had calculated. When all the people heard of this, they said, "The astrologers are Brahma himself."

The king said to the family priest, "What is the reason for delay now?" Then Shatananda called the ministers, and they brought all the auspicious things, fully prepared. Conches, kettledrums and tabors of many kinds were sounded, and auspicious vessels and omens of good fortune were arranged. Fair and gracious married women sang songs, and pure Brahmans chanted the Vedas. In this manner they set out with reverence to receive the guests, and came to the lodging where the wedding party was staying. When they saw the splendor of the retinue of the Lord of Kosala, even the king of the gods seemed very small to them. "The hour has come; now set forth your feet." On hearing this, the drums were struck. Having asked the leave of his guru and performed the rites of the family, the king set out, with the company of sages and holy men accompanying him.

The gods, knowing it to be a most auspicious hour, beat their drums and rained down flowers. Shiva, Brahma and the other hosts of the gods mounted their celestial cars, in many companies. With their bodies thrilling with love and their hearts full of delight, they set out to behold the wedding of Rama. Seeing the city of Janaka, the gods were filled with love, and all their own worlds seemed small to them. They gazed in amazement at the wondrous canopies and at the many kinds of decoration, all of them beyond this world. The men and women of the city were storehouses of beauty, graceful, righteous, of good character and wise. Seeing them, all the gods and goddesses became like stars when the moon has risen and spread its light. Brahma was especially astonished, for he saw nowhere any trace of his own handiwork.

Those whose names, spoken in the world, destroy every root of inauspiciousness, and in whose palms lie the four great aims of life: such, said Shiva, the destroyer of Kama, are Sita and Rama. In this way Shambhu admonished the gods, and then urged his noble bull onward. The gods saw Dasharatha approaching, his heart full of great joy and his body thrilled. With him came an assembly of holy men and Brahmins, who seemed to have taken bodily form to serve him with joy. Beside him shone his four beautiful sons, as if the four kinds of final liberation had all taken bodily form. Seeing the noble pair, one of emerald hue and one of golden, the gods felt no small love. Then, beholding Rama, they rejoiced in their hearts; they praised the king and rained down flowers.

His dark body had the lustre of a peacock's neck, and his beautiful crimson garments put the lightning to shame. He wore wedding ornaments of many kinds, all auspicious and lovely in every way. His charming face was like the clear autumn moon, and his fresh eyes put the lotus to shame. All his beauty was beyond this world; it cannot be described, and it was dear to the heart of everyone who beheld it. His charming brothers shone beside him, as they rode along making their restless horses prance. The young princes displayed the paces of their fine steeds, while the bards of the family proclaimed its glories. The horse on which Rama sat was so graceful in its movement that the king of birds, Garuda, was put to shame at the sight. Its beauty in every way cannot be told; it seemed as though Kama himself had taken the form of a horse.

Of the splendid horse on which Rama rode, not even Sarada could describe the beauty. Shankara was enamored of Rama's beauty, and his fifteen eyes seemed to him exceedingly dear. When Hari looked on Rama with affection, Vishnu, the Lord of Lakshmi, together with Lakshmi, was enchanted. Beholding Rama's beauty, Brahma rejoiced, but realizing that he had only eight eyes, he regretted it. Kartikeya, the general of the gods, felt great delight in his heart, for he had a gain of eyes half again as much as Brahma's. The wise Indra, the lord of the gods, gazed at Rama and counted Gautama's curse a supreme blessing. All the gods envied Indra, saying, "Today there is no one like Purandara." The hosts of gods were delighted to see Rama, and in the assembly of kings on both sides there was special joy.

All of them had faces like the moon and eyes like those of fawns, and each by the beauty of her own form humbled the pride of Rati. They wore fine garments of many different colors, and their bodies were adorned with every kind of ornament. Every limb was made beautiful with auspicious adornments, and they sang in voices that put the cuckoo to shame. Their bracelets, girdle bells and anklets jingled, and at the sight of their gait the elephants of Kama were ashamed. Instruments of many kinds were played, and in the sky and in the city there were auspicious celebrations. Shachi, Sarada, Rama and Bhavani, the pure and naturally wise women of the gods, took on the guise of fine women by a ruse, and all of them went and mingled with the women of the royal household. They sang sweet songs of blessing, and in their overwhelming joy no one recognized them.

Who can tell who was who, or in what joy they all went, to welcome the bridegroom, the Supreme Brahma himself? There was sweet song and the music of drums, the gods rained down flowers, and the splendor was beautiful. Beholding the bridegroom, the very root of bliss, all of them were gladdened at heart; their lotus eyes overflowed with tears, and their fair limbs were covered with a line of thrilling hairs.

The joy that rose in the heart of Sita's mother on seeing Rama in his bridegroom's dress could not be told even by a hundred thousand Sharadas and Sheshas in a hundred ages.

The queens held back the tears from their eyes, knowing the occasion to be auspicious, and with joyful hearts performed the welcoming rite of parichhan. All that the Vedas prescribed and all the customs of the family they carried out in the proper manner. The music of the five instruments sounded, auspicious songs were sung, and cloths and carpets of many kinds were spread along the path. The queens performed the arati and offered him the arghya water of welcome; then Rama proceeded to the pavilion. Dasharatha sat in splendor with his company, and the guardians of the worlds were put to shame when they beheld his magnificence. From time to time the gods rained down flowers, and the Brahmans, well disposed, recited prayers for peace. There was such an uproar in the sky and in the city that no one could hear what another said, or even what he said himself. In this way Rama came to the pavilion; they offered him the arghya and seated him on a throne.

Having seated the bridegroom on his seat and performed the arati, they gaze upon him and find great joy. The women shower down jewels, garments and ornaments in abundance, and sing songs of good omen. Brahma and the other foremost gods, disguised as Brahmans, watch the spectacle; and beholding the beauty of Rama, the sun to the lotus of the Raghu line, they count their lives fulfilled.

The barbers, the torch-bearers, the bards and the dancers received their gifts scattered in honor of Rama, and, bowing their heads, they blessed him with joy, for the gladness in their hearts could not be contained.
