Prakarana 33

This episode transforms the wedding pavilion’s “sweet delight of love” into Maṅgala-dharma. The rasa is chiefly Madhura and Adbhuta, resting upon a foundation of Śānta: the equal-hearted bond of Janaka and Daśaratha as in-laws, showers of divine flowers, and the blessings of sages turn a worldly festivity into a festival of dharma. Here Tulasī converts descriptions of beauty (form, attire, ornaments, delicacies, gifts) into a manual of sādhana: washing of the feet, madhuparka, homa, pāṇigrahaṇa, the circling of the fire—each becomes a rung of the staircase, purifying sense-pleasure, humbling ego, and divinizing relationships (Janaka worshipping Rāma as “equal to Īśa”). In this way, the rasa of the Saguṇa līlā ultimately points toward the Nirguṇa truth: the very Feet that conquer Kāma (the foe of the mind) are also the destroyers of Kali’s stain.

Janaka and Dasharatha met with great affection, performing all the rites, both Vedic and customary. As the two great kings embraced, they shone in splendor; the poets searched and searched for a comparison, and were put to shame. Finding none anywhere, they admitted defeat in their hearts, and concluded that these two were comparable only to each other. Seeing the two fathers of the bride and groom united, the gods were filled with love; they rained down flowers and began to sing their praise. "Since Brahma created the world, we have seen and heard of many weddings." "But today we have seen a match equal in every way, in its splendor and its company, and fathers-in-law who are equals." Hearing the gods' words, so sweet and true, an unearthly love arose on both sides. Spreading beautiful cloths beneath his feet and offering the water of welcome, Janaka respectfully led Dasharatha to the pavilion.

Seeing the pavilion, with its wondrous decoration and beauty, even the sages' minds were captivated. The wise Janaka with his own hands brought them all and set them upon thrones. He worshipped Vasishtha as he would the deity of his family, and with humble reverence received his blessing. The supreme love with which he honored Kaushika (Vishvamitra) cannot be told.

Then Janaka worshipped the Lord of Kosala, regarding him as equal to Shiva, and as none other. With folded hands he made humble entreaty and praise, speaking of his own good fortune and the abundance of his splendor. The king honored all the wedding guests, treating them with respect in every way as he would the father of the bridegroom. He gave fitting seats to everyone. How can I describe it all, with only one mouth, in all that rejoicing? Janaka honored the whole wedding party with gifts, with marks of respect, with humble entreaties and gracious words. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, the guardians of the quarters and the sun, who knew the glory of Rama, took on the guise of excellent Brahmans and watched the festivities, finding the greatest joy. Janaka worshipped them as he would gods, and gave them fine seats, though he did not recognize them.

Seeing that the moment had come, Vasishtha called for Shatananda, who heard and came with respect. "Go now and bring the princess quickly." Receiving the command, the sage went away glad. The wise queen, hearing the words of the family priest, was filled with joy, together with her companions. She called the wives of the Brahmans and the elders of the family, and having performed the family rites, they sang auspicious songs. The excellent goddesses who had taken the form of women were all beautiful by nature, in the bloom of youth. The women were delighted to see them, and without knowing who they were, held them dearer than their own lives. Again and again the queens honored them, regarding them as the equals of Uma, Rama's consort Lakshmi, and Sarada. Having adorned Sita and arranged the procession, they joyfully led her to the pavilion.

The companions set out and reverently brought Sita, having made all the auspicious arrangements. All the lovely women were dressed in the sixteen adornments, and every one of them walked with the gait of an elephant in rut. Hearing their sweet singing, sages abandon their meditation, and the god of love and the cuckoos are put to shame. Anklets, tinkling ornaments and bracelets sound together in fine harmony with the beat of the rhythm.

Sita's beauty cannot be described; my wit is small, and her loveliness is very great. The wedding guests saw Sita approaching, a treasure of beauty, in every way pure and holy. Everyone bowed to her in his own heart; and at the sight of her Rama was fulfilled in every desire. Dasharatha rejoiced together with his sons; the joy in his heart was beyond all telling. The gods bowed and rained down flowers, and the sages' blessings sounded forth, the root of all good fortune. There was singing and the beating of drums, a great uproar; and the men and women were immersed in love and delight. In this way Sita came to the pavilion, and the great sages, full of joy, recited the verses for peace. At that time the two family preceptors performed all the customary rites and observances according to the prescribed rule.

Having performed the customary rites, the gurus joyfully have the Brahmans worship Gauri, Ganesha and the guru (the family gurus). The gods appear in visible form, accept the worship, and give their blessings, and the worshippers are filled with great joy. Whatever auspicious articles, such as the honey-mixture, the sages wished for in their minds at any moment, the attendants stood ready with all of it, in golden trays and pots filled with them. Following the family custom, the Sun-god lovingly told them everything, and they did it all with reverence. In this way, after having the gods worshipped, they seated Sita on a beautiful throne. The love that passed between Sita and Rama as they looked at each other could be perceived by no one. It lies beyond the reach of mind, intellect and noble speech; how then can the poet describe it?

She was known throughout the world as Janaka's chief queen; how can Sita's mother be described? Brahma had gathered together good renown, virtue, happiness and beauty, and had fashioned her out of them all. Knowing that the time had come, the great sages called her, and on hearing it she came respectfully, bringing the married women with her. Sunayana shone at Janaka's left side, as if Maina had taken her place beside Himalaya, the mountain of snow. There were golden vessels and splendid jeweled trays, filled with pure, fragrant and auspicious water. The king and queen, glad at heart, took them in their own hands and brought and set them before Rama. The sages recited the Vedas and auspicious words, and the sky rained down flowers, knowing that the right moment had come. Seeing the bridegroom, the royal couple were filled with love, and they began to wash his holy feet.

They began to wash the lotus feet, the hair of their bodies standing on end with love. In the sky and in the city, song, music and shouts of victory seemed to surge up and spread in every direction. Those lotus feet ever dwell in the lake of the heart of Shiva, the foe of Kama; and the mere remembrance of them once brings purity to the mind, and all the sins of the Kali age flee away. By touching them the wife of the sage, who had been sunk in sin, attained the highest state; the gods describe the nectar of those feet, which Shambhu bears on his head, as the very limit of purity. Sages and yogis, making their minds like bees, serve those feet and attain the goal they desire. Janaka, blessed vessel of fortune, now washed those very feet, and all cried, "Victory, victory!" The two family preceptors joined the palms of the bridegroom and the maiden and recited the lineage. The clasping of hands was accomplished, and Brahma, the gods, men and sages, seeing it, were filled with joy. Seeing the bridegroom, the very root of joy, the royal couple trembled with thrill in their bodies, and their hearts leapt with delight. Following the custom of the world and the Vedas, the ornament of kings gave away his daughter in marriage. As Himavan gave Girija to Mahesha, and the Ocean gave Shri to Hari, so Janaka bestowed Sita on Rama, and a new and beautiful fame spread through the world. How could he make entreaty? The dark-hued form before him made Videha truly bodiless. Then, after the fire-offering was made according to rule, the knot was tied, and the circumambulations began.

The princes and the princesses walk their graceful circuits, and all the onlookers reverently take in the sight with their eyes. That enchanting pair cannot be described; whatever comparison I might offer would fall short. The beautiful reflections of Rama and Sita shone and sparkled in the jewelled pillars. It seemed as though Kama and Rati had taken many forms to behold Rama's matchless wedding. Their longing to see was great, and their bashfulness was not small, so Kama and Rati kept appearing and hiding again and again. All the beholders were absorbed in delight, and like Janaka they forgot themselves. The sages, full of joy, had the couples make their circuits, and they completed every rite together with the customary gifts. Rama put vermilion on Sita's parting, and the beauty of it cannot be told by anyone, not even by Brahma. His lotus hand was well filled with the red powder, and it was as if a serpent, greedy for nectar, were adorning the moon. Then Vasishtha gave his command, and the bridegroom and the bride sat together on one seat.

Rama and Janaki sat upon the noble seat, and Dasharatha was glad at heart. His body thrilled again and again as he saw the fresh fruits of his own good deeds, like new fruit on the tree of paradise. Joy filled the whole world; all said, "Rama's wedding has been performed." How can I describe it? I have only a single tongue, and this great festival of joy has no end. Then Janaka, having received Vasishtha's command, arranged and set in order all that was needed for the weddings, and summoned the princesses Mandavi, Shrutakirti and Urmila. The daughter of Kushaketu, who was first among them and full of virtue, good conduct, happiness and beauty, the king married to Bharata, performing every rite with love. Knowing Janaki's younger sister to be the crown jewel of all beautiful women, he gave her in marriage to Lakshmana, honouring him in every way. The one named Shrutakirti, fair of eye and fair of face, a treasure of every virtue, resplendent in beauty and good character, the king gave to Shatrughna. Seeing one another, the bridegrooms and brides, each suited to the other, rejoiced in their hearts with modest shyness. All were glad and praised their loveliness, and the company of gods rained down flowers. The lovely brides with their handsome bridegrooms all shone together in the one pavilion, as if the four states of the soul had come to dwell in the heart together with their Lord.

In the manner in which the marriage rite of Rama was described, in that same manner all the princes were wed. The abundant dowry cannot be described; the pavilion was filled with gold and jewels. There were blankets, garments, and wonderful silks of every kind, of great value, not of small worth. There were elephants, chariots, horses, menservants and maidservants, and cows adorned with ornaments, like the wish-granting cow. How can an account be made of the many other goods? Only those who saw them can know, for they cannot be told. The guardians of the world looked on it and were filled with longing. The Lord of Avadh accepted it all and was glad. He gave to the beggars whatever each of them desired, and what remained over was brought to the guests' quarters. Then Janaka, with folded hands and in a gentle voice, spoke, having honored the whole wedding party.

Having honored the whole wedding party with respect, gifts, humble courtesy and praise, Janaka, greatly delighted, worshipped and saluted the company of great sages, drawing them to him with love. Bowing his head and propitiating the gods, he spoke to all of them with his hands joined in supplication: gods and saints desire only devotion; can the ocean be satisfied by a handful of water offered in the palms? Then Janaka, with his brother, folded his hands and spoke to the king of Kosala in charming words, steeped in the natural affection and gentleness of his character. "O king, through this alliance with you we have now become great in every way. Know us, together with this kingdom and all its wealth, to be your servants, to be had without any price paid." "Keep these girls as your handmaids and protect them with fresh kindness. Forgive my offence in summoning you here; I have been very bold." Then the ornament of the solar race, in turn, honored his new kinsman, the father of his son's bride, in every way, as one who is a treasure of honor. Their courtesies to one another cannot be told, for their hearts were filled to the brim with love. The hosts of gods rained flowers, and King Dasharatha went to the lodging of the wedding party. There were the sounds of kettledrums, shouts of victory and the chanting of the Vedas, and in the sky and in the city alike a joyous stir of festivity. Then the women companions, singing auspicious songs and having received the permission of the lord of sages, led the bridegrooms together with the brides to the kohabara, the bridal chamber, and the fair women went along.

His dark body was naturally lovely, putting millions of Loves to shame with its beauty. His lotus feet, tinted with lac, were beautiful, and the bee-like minds of sages ever dwell hovering over them. His yellow dhoti, pure and charming, outshone the light of the young sun and of lightning. A sweet-sounding girdle of little bells encircled his waist, enchanting; his arms were long, and beautiful with ornaments. The yellow sacred thread added great splendor, and the ring on his hand stole the heart away. He shone, adorned with all the wedding finery, and broad ornaments gleamed upon his wide chest. A yellow scarf hung across his shoulder from under the arm, and jewels and pearls were fastened to both of its ends. His eyes were like lotuses, lovely earrings hung at his ears, and his face was the treasure-house of all beauty. His brows were beautiful and his nose charming, and the mark on his forehead was the very dwelling of loveliness. A charming wedding crown shone on his head, auspicious, with pearls and jewels strung into it.

The crown strung with great jewels, and every graceful limb of his, stole all hearts. The women of the city and the celestial beauties, gazing at the bridegroom, all broke blades of grass to ward off the evil eye. Waving jewels, garments and ornaments round him as an offering, they performed the lamp-waving rite and sang auspicious songs. The gods rained down flowers, and bards, minstrels and panegyrists proclaimed his glorious fame. The princes and princesses were brought to the bridal chamber, to the delight of the married women, who with great love began to perform the customary rites of the world, singing auspicious songs. Gauri instructed Rama in the rite of the morsel-feeding, and Sarada instructed Sita. The women's apartments, given over to the delight of laughter and play, all gained the fruit of their lives. In the jewel on her own hand Janaki saw the image of the Lord, the treasure of beauty. In her fear of losing the sight, she did not move her vine-like arm, nor turn her gaze. The sport, the merriment, the joy and the love could not be told; only her women friends understood them. Then all the lovely companions led the bridegrooms and brides to the guest quarters. At that time blessings were heard everywhere, and there was great rejoicing in the city and in the sky. All with glad hearts said: "May the four beautiful couples live long!" The chief of yogis, the siddhas, the lords of sages and the gods, having beheld the Lord, beat their kettledrums. Rejoicing and raining down flowers, they departed to their own realms, crying, "Victory, victory, victory!"

Then a great feast was prepared in many kinds of dishes, and Janaka sent and called the wedding guests. Incomparable cloths were spread along the path as welcoming carpets, and the king went forth together with his sons. With respect he washed the feet of all, and seated them on low stools according to their rank. Janaka washed the feet of the lord of Ayodhya; his gentleness and affection cannot be described. Then he washed the lotus feet of Rama, which Shiva keeps hidden in the lotus of his heart. Regarding the three other brothers as equal to Rama, Janaka washed their feet with his own hands. The king gave all of them fitting seats, and then called the cooks and took them all into his charge. With care the leaf-plates began to be laid out, fashioned of jewels as though leaves, and stitched together with golden pins.

Having taken the five ritual mouthfuls, they began to eat, and listening to the songs of playful abuse, they were filled with delight. Dishes of many kinds were set out, equal to nectar, more than can be described. The skilful servers began to serve; of the many kinds of savoury dishes, who could know all their names? Food is said to be of four kinds according to the rules, and each single kind cannot be fully described. There were delicious dishes of many sorts, with the six flavours, and each single flavour came in countless varieties. While they ate, they sang sweet-voiced abuse songs, taking the names of men and women again and again. The abusive songs suited the occasion and shone with charm; hearing them, the king laughed together with the whole company. In this way all of them finished their meal, and water was given them with respect for rinsing the mouth.
