त्र्यशीतितमः सर्गः (Sarga 83) — Hanumān Reports Sītā’s ‘Slaying’; Rāma Collapses; Lakṣmaṇa’s Counter-Discourse on Dharma and Artha
सोऽयमर्थंपरित्यज्यसुखकामःसुखैधितः ।पापमारभतेकर्तुंतदादोषःप्रवर्तते ।।6.83.34।।
so 'yam arthaṃ parityajya sukhakāmaḥ sukhaidhitaḥ |
pāpam ārabhate kartuṃ tadā doṣaḥ pravartate ||6.83.34||
Having cast away wealth, yet still craving pleasure—accustomed to comfort—one begins to commit sin; then fault and downfall set in.
"If one who has been happy seeks happiness on renouncing wealth then proceeds to perform sinful actions it is a mistake."
Unchecked kāma (desire for pleasure) without rightful means (artha) tends to push a person toward adharma—wrong action to satisfy cravings.
Rāvaṇa argues that renunciation of wealth while still seeking pleasure leads to moral error, implicitly criticizing Rāma’s earlier renunciation.
Self-restraint (saṃyama): aligning desires with lawful means so that dharma is not compromised.
