Shloka 6.72.17

अतिकायवधश्रवणं रावणस्य लङ्कारक्षाविधानम् (Ravana’s Reaction to Atikaya’s Death and the Fortification Orders for Lanka)

स तान् सर्वान् हिसन्दिश्यरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।मन्युशल्यंवहन् दीनःप्रविवेशस्वमालयम् ।।।।

sa tān sarvān hi sandiśya rāvaṇo rākṣasādhipaḥ | manyuśalyaṃ vahan dīnaḥ praviveśa svam ālayam ||

Having thus issued instructions to them all, Rāvaṇa—the lord of the Rākṣasas—entered his own residence, wretched, bearing within him the painful thorn of anger.

Ravana, the king of Rakshasas, enjoined the Rakshasas and himself bearing the thorn of wrath, entered the abode desperately.

Unchecked anger is portrayed as a ‘thorn’—a self-wounding state; dharma counsels mastery of passions to preserve right judgment.

After arranging the city’s vigilance, Rāvaṇa withdraws privately, emotionally strained and embittered.

By contrast (through negative portrayal), the need for self-control (dama) and emotional restraint.
