सीताप्रत्याख्यानम् / Rama’s Post-Victory Address to Sītā (Public Opinion and Royal Duty)
विभीषणस्य च तथासफलोऽद्यपरिश्रमः । विगुणंभ्रातरंत्यक्त्वायोमांस्वयमुपस्थितः ।।6.118.9।।
vibhīṣaṇasya ca tathā saphalo 'dya pariśramaḥ | viguṇaṃ bhrātaraṃ tyaktvā yo māṃ svayam upasthitaḥ || 6.118.9 ||
So too, today Vibhīṣaṇa’s effort has borne fruit: abandoning his brother, bereft of virtue, he came of his own accord to seek refuge with me.
"In the same way even Vibheeshana's hard work leaving his brother devoid of good qualities and coming to me on his own has given success."
Dharma can require choosing righteousness over mere blood-ties: Vibhīṣaṇa’s decision to leave an unrighteous brother and seek the protection of a righteous king is presented as a morally successful act whose effort ‘bears fruit’.
In the aftermath of victory, Rāma reflects on the outcomes of key allies’ choices and efforts. Here he notes that Vibhīṣaṇa’s strenuous decision to abandon Rāvaṇa and come voluntarily to Rāma has proven successful in the present situation.
